Three Bonzos And A Piano / Latest Bar / Sat Oct 11
WITH Neil Innes’s gig cancelled I was privileged to witness the only Bonzos in town.
Musos from the mists of time – Rodney Slater, Roger Ruskin Spear and Sam Spoons of the brilliant Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band – joined Dave Glasson for a night of mayhem.
Anyone wandering in early for the late-night “haircut” bands would have wondered what on earth was going on. The performance was so shambolic it appeared as if residents of the Bide A Wee Rest Home for Frazzled Musicians had found the key to the drinks cabinet.
But amid the chaos nuggets of genius sprouted, aided by bucketloads of props. Spear played the actual trouser press used to record “Shirt” in honour of the great Viv Stanshall – you could still smell it ten minutes after the show.
Sam’s electric spoon solo was the funniest thing I’ve seen in years and I even got to join in at one point.
A magnificent shambles.
